The fifth class of the 2011-2012 Class of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy took place on April 14th. Rachel Zillner, Community Banking Manager with SAFE Credit Union spoke to the class about Good Debt/Bad Debt: Using Credit Wisely and Keeping Your Money Safe and Secure with Checking and Saving Accounts.

YEA Class #4
The fourth class of the 2011-2012 Young Entrepreneurs Academy took place on March 10th. For this class we took the students out of their familiar surroundings, that being the office of the Sacramento Black Chamber of Commerce and out into the community on two field trips. The morning was spent at the Nehemiah Corporation of America offices and the Township Nine worksite with Assistant Vice President, Darrell Teat speaking about who they are and what they do. The afternoon was spent at a local McDonald's owned by chamber member Percy Johnson who spoke to the class about franchising and his experience as a franchisee.

Developing Your Brand
The third class for the 2011-2012 Young Entrepreneurs Academy took place on February 11th. Brian Bedford, a Business Professor at Sacramento City College discussed Investing during the first half and Developing Your Brand during the second half of the class.
Mr. Bedford started off the class explaining what investing is and why people invest. Examples included to create wealth, provide retirement income, and to save for a particular purpose. He went on to stress the point that it takes money to make money. The class continued with Mr. Bedford discussing stocks, bonds, and mutual funds as well as risk, investment selection, investment management, risk on return and tips for setting goals. The students worked as a group to complete a Total Return worksheet. |

Young Entrepreneurs Academy Class #2
Topics Covered: Budgeting Myers Briggs Personality Test
The second class of the 2011-2012 Young Entrepreneurs Academy took place on January 14th.
During the first half of the class, Kathleen Olson, Business Specialist with Wells Fargo Bank and an SBCC Board Member spoke to the class about Budgeting. Ms. Olson began her presentation by having the students take a Hands on Banking quiz to get a feel for what they knew about budgeting. She went on to discuss spending plans, smart shopping, creating a budget, saving, investing, and building wealth. Ms. Olson followed up with passing out worksheets on the topics discussed for the students to complete and share with the group. |
