Gary King is the Chief Workforce Officer for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). He is responsible for the strategic vision, alignment and key business results for the energy utility’s talent management segments (organization and employee development, human resource services, inclusion  and employee health & safety) and workplace segments (supply chain, facilities, security, emergency preparedness, and fleet).  King brings over 23 years of human resources experience with both public and private sector organizations to this executive leadership role. He joined SMUD in 1988 and previously led the human resources department in providing a full range of programs and services for the utility’s more than 2,000 employees.

Before coming to SMUD, King was manager of employment for the City of Palo Alto and served in senior human resource management positions for the City and County of San Francisco.  He earned his master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of Maryland and his bachelor’s degree in behavioral science from the Pacific Union College in Angwin, California.
